Continuing our "Collecting Pictures Across Alberta"

The Alberta Band Association’s official newsletter is continuing its online format. We are looking forward to continuing the programming that helps Alberta Music Teachers in their profession.

This year our Board of Directors is seeking the support of the bands across Alberta who are taking pictures of your Bands throughout the season. We are asking for FOIP’d photos of your bands on trips, in concerts, or just enjoying rehearsals. These photos will be collected for an upcoming project that will support all Alberta Bands in the future; however, we will need your pictures.

Please post your FOIP’d photos on Facebook, email them, or Tweet them to @AlbertaBandFeed.

If you would like to submit a short story, share your music trip pictures, or suggest that we highlight a musical event that takes place in your area, please feel free to drop us a line.

Awards

Do you know a distinguished band director who needs to be recognized for their efforts and achievements? The ABA presents 3 awards annually to band directors that have made a difference.

The Keith Mann Award is presented annually to an outstanding new band director with fewer than 6 years’ teaching experience in the province of Alberta. Created to honour the memory of Keith Mann, the recipient will demonstrate Keith’s enthusiasm and dedication to band music.

The Vondis Miller Legacy Award, which was created in memory of Vondis Miller, is a long-service award recognizing an individual who has devoted many years to sharing the joys of music making with young people.

The Elkhorn Award recipient is chosen by former Elkhorn winners.

Nominations are accepted annually and should be accompanied by supporting documentation.

All three Awards are presented at the MCA Awards Banquet.
ABA members may download the Award Nomination Form.

Meet Board Member Darwin Krips

Darwin Krips   Darwin Krips became a board member of the Alberta Band Association in 2010. In his 25-year career, he has taught bands at the high school, junior high and elementary levels in the communities of Fort McMurray, and Sturgeon County, where he has been for the past 15 years.

His program in Sturgeon currently consists of approximately 100 high school musicians ranging from band, choir, drumline, and instrumental guitar.

He also runs a jazz band and directs the Sturgeon Honour Band annually with promising junior high students in his school district.

Currently in the position of ABA President, Darwin has been active in the ABA by running or assisting with with the syllabus and the provincial honor band.

Darwin’s family is also greatly connected to fine arts. He and his wife Crystal play with the New Edmonton Wind Sinfonia, and Crystal is a private piano and flute teacher. Their girls play piano and the oldest is a horn player. Aside from work, Darwin is currently developing a passion for slow-roasted meat recipes and discovering new micro-brew lagers, a great combination when work is done.

The ABA is pleased to have Darwin and his many years of experience help run on the board. He, along with all board members would like to wish you a great festival season and a relaxing summer when your school year ends.

2015 Northern Alberta Junior Honour Band

The 2015 Northern Alberta Junior High Honor Band was a huge success! 98 students from around Northern Alberta participated in the band. They had their first rehearsal on the evening of February 25, 2015 under the direction of Brent Pierce.

For three long days, students rehearsed many hours to perform for their concert at Strathcona Christian Academy alongside the New Edmonton Wind Sinfonia and world-renowned tuba player Patrick Sheridan.

The students were attentive and dedicated throughout the three days and they shone at the concert. Great job!

The 2015 Southern Junior Honour Band was held at Midsun Jr. High from Wednesday February 11–13, 2015 with the culminating concert being performed Friday night in front of a packed audience at the Glenmore Christian Academy theatre to critical acclaim.

The 93-piece ensemble did an amazing job on five selections of repertoire under the expert baton of maestro David Grimstead. A good time was had by all!

Thank you to all our southern Alberta band directors who chose to nominate their students. Please consider nominating your 9s and 8s for next February 2016.
